Ph halts VFA termination

The Philippine government has decided to suspend the termination of the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States, Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. announced.

“But in the vast and swiftly changing circumstances of the world, in the time of pandemic and heightened superpower tensions, a world leader must be quick-minded and fast on his feet for the safety of our nation and the peace of the world,” Locsin said on PRRD’s decision.

Meanwhile, Malacaῆang will just let the DFA deliver the information on the suspension of VFA abrogation. President Duterte is also being anticipated if he will mention the matter in his public address.

The US Embassy through its statement welcomed the move of the government and is hoping for the continued operation with the Philippines in terms of defense and security.

The Department of National Defense (DND) also expressed support and readiness to coordinate with the US to address problems of both countries such as COVID-19.

Security expert Prof. Rommel Banlaoi said the move is timely due to recent developments and to conduct “humanitarian assistance and disaster response in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

After six months, the termination may push through or the VFA may be extended for another six months. – Report from Naomi Tiburcio
