MANILA — This year’s mid-term elections is likely to be among the topics to be discussed at the 118th Plenary Assembly of Catholic Church leaders in the country that began Friday.

“Possible topics would be the elections, because you know the people, especially the Catholic faithful will ask for guidance,” Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) secretary general, Fr. Marvin Mejia, said in an interview.

Mejia, however, said he is not privy as to whether the CBCP would release guidelines for voters to follow.

“I don’t want to preempt, the situation now is different,” Mejia said, adding that they will not endorse any candidate.

CBCP president and Davao Archbishop Romulo Valles, meanwhile, urged the faithful to pray for them as they hold the event at the Pope Pius XII Center, UN Avenue, Manila, until Monday.

“Let me take this opportunity to request for your prayers for us all Bishops of CBCP so that we will always be blessed by the Holy Spirit, guided by the Holy Spirit, strengthened by the Holy Spirit as we do the business and discussions of the CBCP,” he said in an interview over Radio Veritas.

Aside from January, the bi-annual meet, is also held every July, which is considered as the highest decision-making body of the bishops’ group in the country.

According to CBCP data, there are more than 130 bishops in the country, 90 of them are active prelates who are overseeing 86 dioceses and archdioceses across the country.
