Quezon City to provide livelihood for displaced landfill workers

MANILA – Landfill workers affected by the closure of the Payatas dumpsite will be provided with skills and livelihood training by the Quezon City government aside from financial aid worth PHP5,000.

The Quezon City Council on Thursday passed a resolution urging the Quezon City Small Business Development and Promotion Office (QCSBDPO) to conduct livelihood and skills training, business and entrepreneurial seminars and workshops, including financial aid worth PHP5,000 to displaced workers of the Payatas sanitary landfill.

City Resolution 7448-2018, which was introduced by Councilors Precious Hipolito Castelo, Karl Edgar Castelo, Estrella Valmocina, Voltaire Godofredo Liban III, Ramon Medalla, Ranulfo Ludovica and Roderick Paulate, aims to promote self-reliance to indigent families and start-ups for small-scale entrepreneurs affected by the Payatas landfill closure.

To avail of the trainings, workshops and seminar, landfill workers should register under the Payatas Alliance Recycling Exchange Multi-purpose Cooperative (PAREMC), which has more than 2,000 members.

Under City Ordinance 1607-2005, the QCSBDPO is tasked to provide entrepreneurship skills training and education to the city’s underprivileged residents.

“Small Business Development and Promotion Office (formerly known as Sikap Buhay) will provide entrepreneurship training and education, promoting self-reliance among the underprivileged constituents of Quezon City and facilitating the provision of start-up capital for small scale entrepreneurs,” the resolution said.

The closure of the Payatas landfill in August last year left a thousand landfill workers jobless.

“The abrupt closure left a thousand of Barangay Payatas residents with no means of livelihood and there is a need to address the loss of livelihood of said constituents,” the resolution added. (Perfecto Raymundo, Jr./PNA)
