LAOAG CITY — The Department of Education Schools Division of Ilocos Norte (SDIN) has purchased and is set to distribute about 47 units of World Possible’s RACHEL Pi technology, a Raspberry Pi education server that can be accessed by learners even without the use of internet.

RACHEL stands for Remote Area Community Hotspots for Education and Learning.

The small kit is full of educational content from teaching curriculums, Khan Academy materials, Wikipedia, classic literature, reference material and textbooks, alongside vital community materials like medical and first aid textbooks.

“This is part of the continuing innovation in education with the integration technology. The latest version comes complete and ready-to-use for serving RACHEL content for approximately 10 computers or tablets simultaneously, depending on usage,” said Engr. Almadin Domingo, Information Technology Officer of the SDIN, showing a sample of the kit on Thursday.

Priced at PHP4,000 each, Almadin reported that the initial units of RACHEL Pi will be distributed to the 47 multi-grade schools in some remote areas of the province where internet in unavailable.

Prior to the distribution, a one-day training and orientation will be set anytime soon to explain the functions and proper use of the device.

In 2015, Schools Division Superintendent Vilma Eda initiated the use of the RACHEL Pi technology in Batac City, which proved to be beneficial in the teaching-learning process. (Leilanie Adriano/PNA)
