Roque denies seeking nomination from Kabayan partylist

MANILA — Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Thursday denied claims by the Kabayan partylist group that he has sent “feelers” to become one of its nominees in next year’s midterm elections.

“Absolutely false,” Roque told the media in a text message, in response to Kabayan’s claim that it was “not surprised” about receiving a feeler from Roque, who used to be their member.

“We are quite pleased that Mr. Roque considers the value of Kabayan Partylist even at this very late hour,” Kabayan said in a statement.

The partylist, however, emphasized that Roque is “no longer a member of Kabayan Partylist as he was removed in January 2017.”

Roque, meanwhile, reiterated that he has not yet decided on whether he will stay or vacate his post to seek public office as the filing of certificates of candidacy (COCs) kicked off Thursday.

“Still not sure (if) I will run for Senate,” Roque said in a text message, where he also clarified that he has not yet resigned as President Rodrigo Duterte’s spokesman.

Government officials are considered resigned from their respective posts once they file their certificate of candidacy (COC). The filing period for COCs is on Oct. 11-12 and Oct. 15-17

On Tuesday (Oct. 9), Roque confirmed that he has already shot a campaign advertisement despite being undecided about joining the Senatorial race.

Duterte earlier advised Roque to continue working for government and not vacate his post since he would not win in the polls anyway.

The nationwide Pulse Asia senatorial survey showed Roque ranking 29th to 36th place.

He said he was not surprised about receiving a low ranking, lamenting how most senators are elected in office because of fame and power, and not because of possessing the right qualifications.

Duterte offered Roque to head the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS) once it is revived.

Since Roque has yet to make up his mind about his Senate bid, Duterte has offered the (OPS) position to his chief legal counsel, Salvador Panelo. (Azer Parrocha/PNA)
