Students may now avail of fare discounts on weekends, holidays

MANILA — Students are now entitled to fare discounts even during weekends and holidays, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said.

This as the LTFRB issued an order stating that students may avail of the twenty percent discount from Monday to Sunday, including summer breaks and holidays starting October 28.

“Students can avail of the 20 percent discount from Monday to Sunday including summer breaks, legal and special holidays,” the Board said in its memorandum circular (MC) dated October 11 amending MC ‎2005-014.

MC ‎2005-014 states that students may only be granted fare discounts during the school year from Mondays to Fridays. This cannot be availed of on weekends, summer breaks and holidays.

Postgraduate students, however, such as those taking up medicine, law, masters, doctorate degrees, among others, are not covered by the new order.

“We have received complaints in social media,” LTFRB board member and spokesperson Aileen Lizada said in a text message to reporters when asked on the rationale of the decision.

Lizada said the fare discount will be applicable in buses, jeepneys, taxis and other public utility vehicles. (PNA)
