PRRD calls for cooperation among ASEAN nations vs COVID-19

President Rodrigo Duterte on Tuesday has joined the special ASEAN Summit on COVID-19 and has called for cooperation to strengthen the healthcare system of the ASEAN in fighting the disease.

President Duterte also emphasized the importance of food security amid the ongoing crisis.

“It is imperative our people do not go hungry. Failure to do so will lead to social unrest with all its attendant complications. Imposing unnecessary trade restrictions on staple foods, such as rice, and other basic commodities will be harmful to everyone. We have to keep ASEAN markets open and ensure supply chain connectivity,” the President said.

The Chief Executive also expressed support for the measures put in place by ASEAN members state in finding COVID-19 cure.

“We must significantly enhance scientific cooperation, particularly in the area of vaccine and anti-viral treatment research and development. The Philippines is ready to participate in clinical trials and medical studies of potential vaccines and medicines such as Avigan,” he said.

“We are confident our scientists and experts within and outside our region will rise to this colossal challenge. A vaccine and/or treatment must be found sooner rather than later,” he added.

The special ASEAN Summit was conducted through video conferencing. – Report from Mela Lesmoras
