PRRD OKs deferment of child car seat law

President Rodrigo Duterte has agreed to postpone the implementation of the child car seat law.

“Nagdesisyon na po ang ating presidente. Ipinagpaliban o deferred ang pagpapatupad o implementasyon ng child car seats (The president has decided. The implementation of child car seats is postponed or deferred),” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque confirmed on Thursday.

The Child Safety Motor Vehicles Act took effect on February 2 this year, mandating the installation of a child restraint system in private vehicles with young passengers under the age of 12 and height of 4’11”and below.

Following its date of effectivity, authorities clarified that the full implementation which covers the imposition of penalties to violators will have to be postponed considering the impact of the prevailing pandemic.

Meanwhile, the motor vehicle inspection system (MVIS) is no longer mandatory.

“Ibig sabihin, kinakailangan wala pong bagong singil, walang karagdagang singil para sa pagpaparehistro ng mga saksakyan (This means there will be no additional charges in the registration of vehicles),” Sec. Roque said.

The decision of the president is in consideration of the impact of the health crisis being experienced worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic and African Swine Flu (ASF) which altered supply of pork in the country.

“Ang president po kasi ang nangako ng mas komportableng buhay para sa lahat. So tinutupad lang niya ang pangako niya noong eleksyon (The president promised a more comfortable life for all. He is just keeping his promise during the election),” Sec. Roque said. – PTV News Online
