Comelec notes few poll registrants in Dumaguete

DUMAGUETE CITY — The continuing voters’ registration has started to slow down, which is a normal occurrence with 30-40 new registrants on Monday, including correction of entries in Dumaguete City but with no transfer of voters’ registration.

City Election Officer Atty. Gildu Agoncillo enjoined the voting public to make use of the 25-day registration period especially for registrants who failed to beat the deadline of the previous registration so they can participate in the May 14, 2018, Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) and barangay election.

He said Nov. 30, 2017 is six months before the barangay polls, which is required under existing rules so the newly registered voter can exercise his right of suffrage.

Other than correction of entries, reactivation, and voters who will turn 15 years old on election day, the poll body will not accommodate the transfer of precincts or registration records from one barangay to another.

Agoncillo noted that local basketball players who are in demand are transferring their registration records from one barangay to another so they can play basketball for a fee, especially local government units who can afford to import local players.

But the main reason is for new registrants to be accommodated during the 25-day registration period from Nov. 6-30, including Saturdays and Sundays.

Record shows that Dumaguete City only has 1,897 registered voters for the SK aged 15 to 17 years old or a total of 28,977 who can vote up to age 30, out of the total 82,086 registered voters for Dumaguete City as of May 2017. (PNA)
