The overhauling of 72 train coaches of the Metro Rail Transit-3 (MRT-3) has been completed, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

The completion of the overhauling of the rail line’s 23-year-old fleet, which the DOTr described as a “significant” accomplishment, will boost train capacity especially during peak hours, with  18 to 21 deployable train sets.

“With the completion of the LRV overhauling project, the passengers can expect more comfortable and convenient train rides as all the train coaches have been repaired and restored to good condition,” MRT-3 Director for Operations Engr. Oscar Bongon said.

Sumitomo-MHI-TESP, the designer and builder of the MRT-3 System, continued the overhauling in 2019.

It also finished the massive rehabilitation in December 2021, upgrading subsystems including  revenue track replacement and signaling system upgrade.

The DOTr said MRT-3 rail line’s rehabilitation increased train speed from 30 to 60 kph and reduced headway from 8.5-9 mins to 3.5-4 minutes during peak hours and 5 minutes off-peak. –Katrina Gracia Consebido/ag
