Despite the scorching heat, a hailstorm hit the town of Mabinay in Negros Oriental Friday, April 21.

In a video posted on Facebook by Mabinay Mayor Ernie Uy, hail can be seen falling onto a car driving along the streets of Mabinay.

“Ice dyud sagul among ulan diri sa Lumbangan, Mabinay (Ice, mixed with rain, is seen here in Lumbangan, Mabinay),” Uy wrote.

“[Kusog] dyud kaayong ulan, hangin, ug kilat (There’s also heavy rain, wind, and lightning),” he added.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), hail is an ice that falls during a severe thunderstorm.

Hail forms when an area is too hot, causing an increase in water vapor that exceeds the freezing level and becomes ice.

“Kapag marami nang yelo na sa itaas ng itaas ng isang thunderstorm clouds, ito ay bumabagsak sa lupa bilang isang hail,” PAGASA noted.

The weather bureau said hail usually falls at the speed of over 100 kilometers per hour. – cf
