ILOILO CITY — Eleven establishments in Boracay Island in Malay, Aklan may face closure should they fail to properly manage their wastewater materials.
Around 180 establishments were inventoried by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) starting July until October this year.
The inventory found 11 establishments with unconnected sewerage system and their waste materials go directly to the drainage canal, said DENR regional director Jim Sampulna on Tuesday afternoon.
These are the Jet Store and Sol Y Sombra, which to date have already complied with their commitments; Andok’s Restaurant and Shore Time, which also committed to comply and are subject to monitoring; Lugar Bonito Hotel, Metropolitan Doctors Medical Clinic, Mini Stop or UYPH Retail, Korean Restaurant, Boracay Island Adventure and Casa Asia, which are yet to be scheduled for technical conference and Cocomangas Bar, which also await technical conference.
Arjunn Calvo of the EMB said establishments that completed technical conference committed to “connect to the existing sewer line and close any discharge into the drainage canal.”
Sampulna said establishments that failed to comply with their commitments after the technical conference would face cancellation of their environmental compliance certificate (ECC).
He added that the Department of Tourism also promised to cancel their accreditation while the local government of Malay would do the same with their business permit forcing them to stop operations.
The regional director added that they are not yet done with the inventory but they will continue to coordinate with the local government unit of Malay for the monitoring of establishments.
Meantime, they would just concentrate on the 11 violators, he said. (PNA)
