Japan has committed a total funding of ¥356 million or about P134 million for the scholarship grants of qualified young Filipino government employees as part of its Project for Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS).
The signing and exchange of notes for the JDS was formalized by Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Kazuya Endo and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro during the state visit of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. to Japan on May 28.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, the Japanese Embassy in the Philippines said the project “will support the master’s degree and doctoral degree education of 19 young Filipino government officers for the 2027 to 2028 academic year at leading universities in Japan.”
The JDS is part of Japan’s continuing support for the human resource development initiatives of the Philippines aimed at strengthening the expertise of Filipino professionals in their respective fields to enable them to contribute further to national development.
The embassy said that since its launch in 2002, the JDS program has already helped 479 fellows from the Philippines.
JDS fellows are expected to actively engage in policy formulation and implementation of social and economic development policies upon completion of the program and return to their home countries.
The scholarship also promotes deeper understanding of Japanese society and culture while strengthening bilateral ties between the Philippines and Japan.
