BAGUIO CITY — It’s all systems go for Batang Pinoy 2018.

The local governments of Baguio City and Benguet province, and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) have signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA), ensuring mutual cooperation for the successful holding of the national youth sporting event in this city and in Benguet on Sept. 15-21.

“This agreement aims to achieve mutual cooperation, benefit, satisfaction, and support between the three parties,” the MOA said.

The MOA also identified the PSC as mandated to promote physical fitness and sports development to build a physically fit and alert citizenry. It says the commission undertakes necessary programs, projects, and activities like the Philippine Youth Games or the “Batang Pinoy”.

Batang Pinoy is the government’s annual multi-sports meet for school children and out-of-school youth aged 15 and below.

Benguet, which is co-hosting the event with Baguio, will be the venue of six events.

As hosts, the city and Benguet, particularly the capital town La Trinidad, will provide the playing venues, set billeting facilities for athletes and coaches, augment local transportation, medical personnel and responders, as well as ensure the security of the participants.

The PSC picked Baguio and Benguet to host the annual event in line with its promotion of sports in the countryside.

PSC Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez has apparently seen the potential of the two localities as sports hubs.

A total of 28 events will be played during the Batang Pinoy national finals. The City of Pines will host 22 events, and the rest will be done in La Trinidad town in Benguet, known as the country’s Strawberry Capital. (Pamela Mariz Geminiano/PNA)
