CEBU CITY — Newly-elected Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) officials will spearhead the garbage collection in their respective barangays in line with the “Basura Mo, Sardinas Ko” project of Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, Department of Public Services (DPS) chief Roberto Cabarrubias said Friday.

The “Basura Mo, Sardinas Ko” program encourages all residents to collect one sack of garbage and exchange them for a can of sardines. It is Cebu City’s version of a similar project in Curitiba, Brazil, where garbage is being exchanged for eggs.

“The newly-elected SK officials are going to organize and identify youths in their respective barangays to collect the garbage, especially in the creeks,” Cabarrubias, a former city councilor, said.

He said the DPS will meet with the SK officials and train them on how to lead their barangays in garbage collection and maintaining cleanliness.

“The SK will disseminate the information about the program. They are also going to identify the canals, creeks, drainage, or rivers where there is a lot of trash,” Cabarrubias said. (Bebie Jane Casipong/PNA)
