COMELEC keeps an eye on digital vote buying in 2022 polls

The Commission on Elections (COMELEC) is seeking help from financial experts amid probable use of mobile wallets and GCash as platforms for vote buying in the coming 2022 election.

In a webinar on Monday (Aug. 16), COMELEC Commissioner Rowena Guanzon said financial experts and alumni of the University of the Philippines School of Economics have told her that the digital vote buying can be traced by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

Guanzon warned that any politician who will conduct digital vote buying through GCash can be caught by the COMELEC through BSP.

“The Central Bank has the power and the capacity to trace this vote buying through GCash and just also warning, the politicians know you’re going to be found out,” she said.

“If you think you’re 10 steps smarter than us… think about automated voting. It happened. Before it’s so easy to fake the ballot, one person…but now you have the automated vote counting machines,” she added.

The COMELEC also urged the eligible individuals to register before the last day of voter registration on Sept. 30. – Report from PTV News / CF – bny
