DOLE mulls non-wage benefits for workers

MANILA — The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is studying the possibility of giving non-wage benefits to workers to help them cope with the rise in prices of basic commodities and services due to quickening inflation.

“The cluster of DOLE Undersecretary Ciriaco Lagunzad said they will come out with their own recommendations. It is non-monetary,” said DOLE Secretary Silvestre Bello III in an interview on Wednesday.

Bello, however, did not give other details on the matter.

On the other hand, the Labor chief reported that the earlier proposal for cash subsidy amounting to PHP200 per month for three years, is still pending at the Office of the President.

“Our subsidy proposal is still pending, no action on that yet. Maybe they are thoroughly studying it and we don’t want to rush them,” he said.

Last June, Bello said they are proposing that cash subsidy be provided to minimum wage earners to help them cope with inflation.

Reports said inflation or the rise in prices of basic commodities and services will continue to quicken in the coming months. (Ferdinand Patinio/PNA)
