ILOILO CITY — The province of Guimaras is eyeing the title of becoming the “Lenten Capital” of Western Visayas with the Integrated Lenten Festival celebrations observed in three of its five municipalities.

In a phone interview Wednesday, Liberty Ferrer, Guimaras Provincial Tourism Officer, said the town of Buenavista has its “Worship Festival,” “Pagtaltal” in Jordan, and “Pamalandong sa Tamborong” in San Lorenzo.

“The province wanted to package the island as Lenten Capital. Starting this year, we started promoting the province as an Integrated Lenten Season (destination),” she said.

She added the events are integrated so regardless of the day one arrives in the province there is one celebration they will be able to witness.

The Worship Festival is a celebration during Palm Sunday. The festival does a re-enactment of what happened during the entry of Jesus to Jerusalem. It will culminate with another celebration on Black Saturday.

The next stop is the “Pamalandong” in San Lorenzo, which showcases the Way of the Cross in life-sized images.

Pilgrims have options whether to trek the Balaan Bukid in Jordan, Guimaras or visit San Lorenzo first.

On Friday, the “Pagtaltal” of Jordan town is another destination. The event, now on its 44th year, portrays the life of Jesus Christ.

For 10 years, a street presentation in four areas is being done that will culminate atop the Balaan Bukid that entails a 1.7 kilometers trek, starting from the Guimaras plaza also situated in Jordan.
