LIST: Films to binge-watch this Holy Week

By Arabella Asis

Holy Week used to limit viewers’ options on what to watch. Networks usually halt their normal programming in exchange for an exclusive showing of their selected programs related to lent.

With various streaming platforms available online, anyone can watch what they like wherever they are. For the Lenten season, here are some binge-worthy films that are worth your time.

Seven Sundays (2017)

This family comedy-drama film by Cathy Garcia-Molina highlights the dynamics of Filipino families.

The story revolves around the reunion of siblings portrayed by actors Aga Mulach, Dingdong Dantes, Christine Reyes, and Enrique Gil, when their father, played by Ronaldo Valdez, was diagnosed with cancer.

Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2013)

The South Korean comedy-drama has never failed to pierce through the hearts of its viewers. In fact, the Philippines also recreated the film last 2019.

This is a story of the unbreakable bond between a father and a daughter. The father, a mentally challenged wrongly accused inmate, was helped by his tough-hearted co-prisoners to fight for justice.

Prayers for Bobby (2009)

The award-winning film of Russel Mulcahy is an adaptation of a true story of Leroy F. Aarons’ book from 1995.

Devout Christian Mary Griffith, played by Sigourney Weaver, struggled between her faith and the homosexuality of her son, Bobby, played by Ryan Kelley.

Himala (1982)

The timeless and award-winning film of Ishmael Bernal and Ricky Lee shocked the Philippine cinema when it was released in 1982.

Himala centers on Nora Aunor’s character, Elsa, who claimed to witness Virgin Mary and got the ability to cure diseases.

Tanging Yaman (2000)

This religious family drama portrays the challenges once conflict arises within the family.

Starring Gloria Romero, Johnny Delgado, Dina Bonnevie, and Edu Manzano, this all-star cast never failed to bring a nostalgic feeling.

Ten Commandments (1956)

Is Lenten even complete without this film staple?

Exploring the history of the 10 commandments, the film depicts the life of Moses from discovering his true identity to how he dedicated his life through God’s will.

Passion of Christ (2004)

An annual showing of this film on Philippine television only proves that this has become a tradition for Filipinos.

The film follows Jesus’ journey to crucifixion which focuses on betrayal and faith among his disciples.

Holy Week is a significant time for Christians around the world. Whether you commemorate this week through film viewing or offering church services, may it deepen your faith in the teachings and lessons of Jesus Christ. –ag
