Public advised to stay indoors as heat index increases

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is advising the public to take precautionary measures as the heat index may increase in the coming days.

Based on its heat index report today (May 10), the heat index at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) reached 43 degrees. The hottest weather was felt in Dagupan City in Pangasinan with a 46 degrees heat index.

Other areas that registered heat indexes of over 40 degrees today are Ambulong, Aparri, Clark Airport, Iba, Laoag, and Tuguegarao City.

Based on the five-day heat index forecast of PAGASA, most areas in the country will have a heat index of 32 to 41 degrees within the week. 

Last May 9, the highest temperature so far — 49 degrees —was recorded around 2:00 p.m. in Dagupan City, Pangasinan. 

According to PAGASA, there is the possibility of fatigue “with prolonged exposure and activity” from 27 to 32 degrees, while heat cramps, exhaustion, and stroke are possible from 32 to 41 degrees.

Cramps and exhaustion are also likely, together with the probability of stroke with continued activity under 41 to 54 degrees or “danger” category.

Heat stroke is likewise “imminent” with a heat index over 54 degrees.

The agency also gave some tips to avoid being affected by the heat: 

  • Stay indoors as much as possible.
  • “Stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine” when air conditioning is unavailable.
  • Take more fluids regularly.
  • Avoid drinking liquor, which can cause dehydration.
  • Eat smaller meals “more often” rather than large meals.
  • Avoid high protein foods that may increase metabolic heat.
  • Wear lightweight and light-colored clothes to stay cool.
