MANILA — President Rodrigo Duterte has expressed concern over the collision of two trains of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) on Saturday that injured at least 34 people, Malacañang said on Monday.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said the President is currently awaiting results of the investigation being conducted by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
“Of course, the President is concerned. That’s why he’s waiting for the result of the investigation. The whys and the wherefores of the accident,” Panelo said in a Palace media briefing.
On Saturday at about 9:51 p.m., a train with passengers on board, who were bound for the Santolan station, collided with an empty train parked on the tracks between the Cubao and Anonas stations.
The incident prompted the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA) to suspend the operations of LRT-2.
DOTr Assistant Secretary for Communications Goddes Hope Libiran said LRT-2 resumed its operations with train insertion at 10:47 a.m. on Sunday.
The DOTr and LRTA earlier assured that it would shoulder the medical expenses of the persons injured and provide them assistance.
A fact-finding committee has been tasked to investigate the cause of the collision, make recommendations to prevent similar incidents, and assess the response and actions taken by the LRT-2 management.
