MANILA – To reach out to new registrants, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will hold voter registration in malls and schools during the two-month voter registration set to start next month.
According to its Twitter account, @radyocomelec, the Commission will be establishing satellite registration inside private establishments and educational institutions to encourage more people, especially new voters to register.
“Comelec will be using satellite registration venues like malls and schools to ensure that the commission reaches out to new voter registrants,” it said, quoting Teopisto Elnas Jr., director of the poll body’s Election and Barangay Affairs Department (EBAD).
The registration period will be held from August 1 to September 30.
“#VoterReg2019 Dir. Elnas further said that voter registration is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Saturday, including holidays,” the poll body added.
It noted that voter registration is open for new regular voters, Sangguniang Kabataan voters, transfer of registration and reactivation of registration.
The Comelec added that those who are eligible to register as a voter should be: a Filipino citizen, a resident of the Philippines, (resides at the locality where he/she intends to vote for at least six months).
For those who would like to register as for youth voters, the applicant should be 15 years old on or before the May 11, 2020 SK polls.
As for regular voters, he/she must be 18 years old on or before the May 11, 2020, village elections.
Earlier, Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said that they are looking to register some 2 million new voters during the two-month registration period.
The last time the poll body held the enlisting of voters was from July 2, 2018 to September 29, 2018, where more than 2.5 million people have filed applications for voter registration.
In the May 13, 2019 polls, the country had over 61 million local registered voters.
