PRRD signs RA no. 11480

President Rodrigo R. Duterte signed the Republic Act No. 11480 on Friday, July 17 giving leeway for the opening of classes to be moved in times of crisis.

President Duterte has been allowed to set a different date for the school opening in accordance with the recommendation of the Secretary of Department of Education (DepEd).

In a statement, Sec. Leonor Briones expressed her gratitude for the signing of the law.

“We thank the President for signing Republic Act 11480 amending RA 7797 mandating the Secretary of Education to recommend to the Chief Executive adjustments in the school calendar in ‘times of national emergency’.”

The DepEd is currently coordinating with authorities and will soon release the law’s implementing rules and regulations.

“The Department has been consulted and has conferred with the President and the legislators throughout the process and we will issue corresponding implementing rules and regulations soonest as required by the law.”

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque stated that the said law gives “flexibility” to the government and the public. – Report from Mela Lesmoras
