CHR calls for end to ‘sexist, misogynistic’ campaigning

By Gabriela Baron

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has called for an end to “sexist and misogynistic” campaigning.

“Since 2016, the Commission has spoken out against the rampant and normalized sexism and misogyny during and even after elections,” CHR said in a statement.

“During the 2019 elections, we continued to call out practices that demean, objectify, and make women and women’s bodies as objects of entertainment and weapons of political mudslinging in the middle of campaign sorties,” CHR added.

The Commission also condemned the manipulated and fabricated videos of Vice President Leni Robredo’s daughter, Aika Robredo, that recently circulated online.

CHR urged government agencies to address the different forms of “gender-based violence and harassment perpetrated during the conduct of current election campaign.”

It also challenged social media giants to take a stand against misogyny and sexism and prodded the public to be “more discerning” and refuse sharing “falsehoods and fabrications.”

“Let us render violence against women in politics visible and let us document and respond to all forms of gender-based violence committed during and even after this election period.”

CHR said the public may report gender-related election violations in its reporting portal at gbvcovid.report. – ag
