PTV, ABU hold media workshop on socmed strategy, countering hate speech

The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in partnership with the People’s Television Network (PTV) began Wednesday, Jan. 25, its media consultancy workshop tackling social media strategy with attention to addressing hate speech.

The two-day event attended by various media organizations was also in coordination with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization International Programme For the Development of Communication (UNESCO IPDC).

“Polarization is increasing and journalists and the media have a very important role in guiding conversations also in the society, and making sure that people trust the stories they hear, and there is a verification of sources, and of course that misinformation and disinformation get caught,” expert and trainer Sanne Breimer said.

Breimer, an expert of the IDPC project, led the consultancy workshop for managerial level personnel.

Also tackled are disinformation, minimizing hate speech, social categorizations, solutions journalism, and on how journalists can protect themselves in the digital scene even with the use of artificial intelligence.

She also introduced measures to improve social media content and reach on Instagram.

Meanwhile, PTV General Manager Julio Castillo Jr. noted in his speech the importance of effective information dissemination under the administration of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

“Isa sa mga hangarin ng ating Presidente ay talagang maiparating ang tamang impormasyon sa ating mga mamamayan and to the world,” he said.

“So isa ito sa mga activity, isa ito sa mga paraan para mapagtibay ang mga ganitong information campaign,” he added.

The event is set to conclude on Thursday with a discussion on the role of social media platforms Instagram and Tiktok, as well as mobile journalism. Report from Mela Lesmoras/AG – gb
