President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged Filipinos to participate in the global observance of the 2026 Earth Hour this Saturday night, underscoring the event’s relevance in the current oil crisis brought by the conflict in the Middle East.

In a video message, the President stressed that Earth Hour encourages energy conservation and key practices to tackle the planet’s major environmental challenges.

“This year’s event provides a timely and relevant opportunity for us to reflect not only on the issue of climate change and environmental preservation, but also on the need to conserve energy and to limit fuel consumption amid the current global crisis,” Marcos said.

Every year in late March, communities around the globe give an hour for the planet, turning off non-essential electric lights from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

An initiative of the Worldwide Fund for Nature (WWF), the movement marks its 20th anniversary this year.

With the theme “Switch on Habits for Earth,” the 2026 Earth Hour emphasizes the need to develop positive habits for nature, noting that even a small, intentional act can grow into tangible difference when repeated over time.

President Marcos Jr. said Earth Hour reminds us how energy usage affects everyone and the future of the planet—that even the simple act of turning lights off for an hour “goes a long way.”

“May the true meaning of Earth Hour be part of our lives starting tonight. Let it guide our habits, inform our actions, and inspire cooperation among our communities towards responsible and sustainable energy use,” he said.

The Chief Executive’s call comes amid the Middle East tensions causing global disruptions, resulting in rising fuel prices that has affected countries dependent on oil from the region, such as the Philippines.

As part of the government’s efforts to promote energy conservation amid global uncertainties, Marcos previously ordered government offices and encouraged the public to reduce electricity and fuel consumption.

The Philippines is now under a state of national energy emergency, enabling a more coordinated, whole-of-government approach to “address the risks posed by disruptions in the global energy supply and the domestic economy,” according to Executive Order 110.

Malacañang on Friday said no energy lockdown is seen for now as the government continues to secure alternative fuel sources.
