Phivolcs: No tsunami threat after Alaska quake

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Thursday afternoon said there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines following a magnitude 8.2 earthquake that struck the Alaska Peninsula.

“No destructive tsunami threat exists based on available data. This is for information purposes only and there is no tsunami threat to the Philippines from this earthquake,” Phivolcs said.

Earlier today, seismologists advised coastal communities and provinces facing the Pacific Ocean to monitor possible developments. No evacuation activities were ordered.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake southeast of Perryville, Alaska was at a depth of 35 kilometers. (PTV)/AG-rir
