MANILA — Chinese President Xi Jinping penned an appreciation letter on Thursday thanking President Rodrigo Duterte for the “friendship and warm hospitality” during his historic state visit to the Philippines.

Xi cited the talks he had with the Chief Executive, former president and House Speaker Gloria Arroyo and Senate President Vicente Sotto III.

“We had in-depth exchange of views, reached important agreement on our bilateral relations and issues of shared interest, and witness the signing of a series of cooperation documents. I am truly pleased with the fruitful outcomes of this visit,” stated his letter, released by the Chinese Embassy in Manila.

“During the visit, I was once again deeply touched by your sincerity and determination to grow our bilateral relations and by the friendly sentiment of the Philippine people toward the Chinese people,” he added.

The Chinese leader said he was also “deeply impressed” by Duterte’s insight into the relations between China and the Philippines and the “current international situation, which proves once again that China and the Philippines are partners in a common journey toward peace and development.”

He also cited his “personal friendship” with Duterte in the letter.

“I will work with you to strengthen political mutual trust and deepen practical cooperation in all fields so that the tree of China-Philippines friendship will grow more luxuriant and bear more fruits,” he added.

He expressed hope that the China-Philippines friendship will “grow ever stronger,” as he wished the Filipino leader good health and success.

Xi visited the Philippines from Nov. 20 to 21, a first of its kind for a Chinese state leader during the past decade.
