BACOLOD CITY — Presidential Assistant for the Visayas Michael Lloyd Dino lauded Bacolodnons for the continuing dynamic growth of the city, which turned 80 on June 18.

“You, the Bacoleños have come a long way from being a sleepy town of sugar plantations to an economic powerhouse in the Visayas,” he said in his speech during the commemoration rites at the L’ Fisher Hotel on Monday.

Dino noted that since 1938, the progress of Bacolod has been characterized by consistent dynamic growth.

“Your city has received numerous national awards in local governance, as a business-friendly city, and even as top model city of the Philippines. I congratulate all of you, because I believe that all of you here have helped this city grow into what it is now,” he added.

Dino also said he cannot help but notice that the government’s “Build, Build, Build” program has completely changed Bacolod’s landscape and skyline.

“The Bacolod-Silay Airport expansion and improvement is enrolled under the ‘Build, Build, Build’ program. Because of the expansion, you will be ready to serve influx of passengers and boost your tourism industry,” he said.

He added that the proposed Negros-Panay Bridge aimed to connect all provinces in the Visayas is seen to catalyze more production and investments in Bacolod.

With a fund of PHP2 billion, Negros Occidental-Iloilo-Guimaras bridge, which is 19 kilometers long, will have road components traversing Bacolod.

“During the construction phase, many of our people will be hired and will spur economic activity in the city. However, growth and development also brings with it corresponding challenges such as traffic, pollution, flooding, and all other ills of living in a big city,” Dino said.

He pointed out that all these have to be addressed, but he has faith that the local government can find solutions to these problems. (Nanette Guadalquiver/PNA)
